Marriage, it’s all about knowing when to laugh. I think we’ll be fine.

I’ve been long contemplating on starting a professional blog to discuss my opinions on robotics, design and accessibility.  Maybe I’ll get to it within the next month.

Until then, here’s a sneak preview for the robot I’m developing. We’re calling it Chaiwala, after Slumdog Millionaire.

Using Word Clouds for a Name Card

In Uncategorized on October 4, 2009 by vikasreddyenti

I’m working on a concept for my personal name card and I’m envisioning using a word cloud on the back of the card to illustrate my various interests and qualities. Think of it as a resume of sorts.

The inspiration for using word clouds comes after creating a few aesthetically pleasing word clouds from Wordle – an online project originating from IBM. It has an amazing collection of really good free fonts and the intelligent layout code produces great results as shown below. You can also have Wordle go through a certain document and generate wordclouds to create a summary of the document.

I exported the above wordcloud as a pdf and then imported it into Inkscape. Using Chaitu’s color scheme, I was able to recolor the wordcloud and also rearranged it to give it a cleaner look.

I’m currently looking for namecard printers in Singapore and am also considering registering a domain name. More updates coming up.

Finally it’s done. Look out for it in your mailboxes, should be shipping out in a month :)

Adapt for Seniors

In Technology, Thinks on December 18, 2008 by vikasreddyenti

It just amazes me sometimes the kind of attention we get at Cornell MineSweeper, sometimes cause of the work we do and other times, well see for yourself.

I am a  73 year old woman, and my husband is 75 and we really like minesweeper for keeping our ability to focus fine-tuned, but we need more time in the learning phase of the game.  Right now, we don’t make errors, but we run out of time before we can win a game.  I wonder if you could set it up  so that we could adjust the time allowed.  That way, we could make progress in two dimensions:  time and accuracy…  Of course, if not, we can always just keep at it, until we can do it in the time that you allot.
Learning new things and doing things that require intense focus is so important as we get older, that it would be great to be able to do it in a game that we like —and win once in a while.
Thanks for considering the suggestion.

Maybe it’s time we changed our name?

How to design a self-sufficient city to survive 200 years?

In Thinks on December 16, 2008 by vikasreddyenti

I watched City of Ember today and I was amazed at how they portrayed the foresight of the ‘Builders’ in designing a underground city to be self-sufficient for 200 years. Before we get to the city, let’s ponder a second as to why would humanity need an underground city. Moreover, if these ‘Builders’ had such great foresight, why did they not prevent mankind from reaching such a predicament?
Albert Einstein has been attributed to saying-

We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them

Are you happy?

In Ramblings, Thinks on November 30, 2008 by vikasreddyenti

I’ve never been able to answer that and the question only keeps getting harder.

The other thing people often say to me is that I’m lucky. Maybe that’s true but I feel that Samuel Goldwyn’s more accurate in describing my situation :

The harder I work, the luckier I get.

In retrospect that’s pretty much been my life mantra. But it’s not working now. All I get is more and more sh*t for trying. And I’m scared that I’m returning to my depressed childhood days where all I thought about was running away, forever.

I need to snap out of this and I need to do it soon.
